COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT // Yosemite Hiking Retreat

Last month we were honored to work with friend & breast cancer survivor Laura Milstead to help provide a Yosemite hiking retreat experience for (16) survivors. The weekend was an extension of the B4BC Survivorship Fund, established to connect breast cancer survivors with nature-based wellness experiences that enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship.

PAUSE FOR PREVENTION // LOVE YOURSELF

When we talk about ways to prevent breast cancer, one of the lesser mentioned aspects of taking care of your body is LOVING YOURSELF (for the rest of B4BC’s “7 Tips to Stomp Out Breast Cancer”: http://bit.ly/1agB9hX).

It sounds simple enough, but sometimes it takes some extra thought. For this weeks Pause for Prevention, we’re taking a page from yoga girl Rachel Brathen Yoga Lifestyle, and a little rant about her experience with looks and body image, and why it’s important to LOVE YOURSELF just as you are.

TASTY TUESDAYS // Elena Hight’s Pineapple Sauce

It’s the last Tuesday of the month, which means that B4BC team rider Elena Hight is contributing one of her favorite recipes for Tasty Tuesday! Pineapples have many cancer fighting properties, such as bromelain which helps protect again breast and lung cancer, and well as containing vitamin C and other anti-inflammatory elements. So lather it on to your favorite healthy dish and enjoy!

PAUSE FOR PREVENTION // Why Sitting is Bad for You

You’ve heard it before – it’s not great to sit all day. But have you ever looked at the reasons why? It’s pretty scary!

If you sit for six hours a day, whether you’re at work, in class, or just vegging on the couch, then your risk of heart disease has increased by up to 64 percent, you’re shaving off seven years of quality life, and you’re also more at risk for certain types of cancer.

PAUSE FOR PREVENTION // Human Gene Patents Overturned!

SUCCESS! The Supreme Court has ruled this morning in an unanimous ruling that human genes CANNOT be patented.

This is a big deal for the breast cancer prevention community because it will result in affordable genetic testing, including for BRCA variants that indicate increased breast cancer risk. The particular genes at issue received public attention after the actress Angelina Jolie revealed in May that she had had a preventive double mastectomy after learning that she had inherited a faulty copy of a gene that put her at high risk for breast cancer. The price of the test, often more than $3,000, was partly a product of Myriad’s patent, putting it out of reach for some women.

TASTY TUESDAYS // SUSHI SALAD

Welcome to sushi salad. We just took sushi to the next level, and salad for that matter, with this awesome combination that is an explosion of deliciousness. This salad contains all the benefits of a good sushi bar: the combination of complex carbs, complete proteins and a healthy dose of vitamin B12 helps maintain normal metabolism and regulate energy levels, along with bunches of other essential vitamins and nutrients.

MEGAN PISCHKE’S CANCER JOURNAL // UPDATE

It’s a Friday—yay! I don’t know why I’m so excited, its not like I have a job. Actually, chemo is a job. Last week I started the weekly treatments of Paxil- something or other (Taxol), and will have 12 in total, and have already done 2. Only 10 left! And by the way things are settling in, the scheduling, all the other appointments, ect, time is flying by. And as much as I want chemo DONE, I still want time to linger a bit. I have a 22 month old wild beautiful boy, and my little girl just turned 7…there is no need to rush these years.

TASTY TUESDAYS // Superfood Berry Chia Pudding

Remember in the 90’s where having a “Ch-ch-ch-Chia Pet” was all the rage? Well, now we think you should take those seeds and instead of planting them, eat them.

Chia seeds are a known superfood and have all kinds of health benefits like being a great source of omega-3’s, improving digestive health, stabilizing your glycemic index, and being chock-full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They also have a unique property where after soaking in a liquid, they swell up which is what gives this healthy recipe a pudding-like texture! Shake this up and put in your fridge tonight, and enjoy tomorrow morning for breakfast!
