CANCER FIGHTING FOODS // Minty Maca Spirulina Smoothie

When you’re feeling rundown from long work hours, overdoing your workout routine, or lack of sleep, try giving Spirulina a try. Spirulina is a nutrient-rich form of fresh-water algae, grown and dried into a deep, dark green (nutrient-rich) powder with an added bonus of containing the highest concentration of complete proteins found in any food. Now, that is a superfood! We find it easiest to use Spirulina in smoothies, dips, and dressings, but there are tons of ways for you to enjoy it!

BREAST CANCER PREVENTION // Make the Day of a Fighter

In honor of this weekend’s Chasing Sunshine Retreat, we’ve decided to mix it up with this week’s Breast Cancer Prevention post. Unfortunately, cancer is a reality in our world and chances are we all know someone who has been affected. It’s our jobs to make those fighters feel as comfortable as possible and give them the motivation and support to keep fighting! When a person first gets a cancer diagnosis, they’re often so overwhelmed they have no idea how to ask for help or what to ask for — but they sure need it. If you have a friend or family member with cancer that you want to help, don’t make the mistake of making a vague, questionably sincere offer “Well, call me when you need me!” (they won’t). Instead, make their life easier by anticipating his or her needs and giving tangible, much-needed support.

CANCER FIGHTING FOODS // 8 Foods to Balance Your Hormones

We’ve talked a lot about the importance of keeping your hormones balanced and your estrogen at healthy levels in order to reduce your breast cancer risk. What you eat regulates many aspects of body function, including the secretion of certain hormones. Your diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight and ward of different diseases and sicknesses. Below is a list of foods to eat (and to avoid) that will help you maintain a healthy hormonal balance.

SKATE SERIES SPOTLIGHT: 12-year-old Katie Lyssand

12-year-old Katie Lyssand was not only our top fundraiser at B4BC’s Skate The Lake 2015, but she also was the youngest girl to skate the entire 28 miles. Katie skates for her family who has a long history of women’s cancers. She spent two months collecting donations not only from family and friends, but also going door-to-door to businesses around her community explaining her goal to raise funds to educate young people about breast cancer and support young survivors.

The Dirty Dozen & The Clean Fifteen

Unfortunately, today we can never be too careful with what we eat. Tons of the fruits and veggies we enjoy on a daily basis are grown in fields where nasty cancer-causing toxins are used. It’s our job to be aware of what we are eating and know what foods to avoid in order to keep our bodies safe. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) aims to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. Each year they produce lists to teach us what foods to ditch and what foods to enjoy.
