This past weekend we had three incredible days of educational outreach at the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, CA! The WSL 6-star event drew the best female surfers in the world, including B4BC team riders Malia Manuel, Courtney Conlogue, and Sage Erickson.
Now in its 9th year, the Supergirl Pro showcases girls in action sports and celebrates female strength, independence and empowerment! We’ve been a nonprofit partner of the event since it’s inception in 2007, and this year we had the opportunity to activate B4BC Basecamp on the sand where we partnered with our friends from Sun Bum, O’Neill Women’s, Zico coconut water, and The Futon Shop to bring beach goers a health and wellness experience onsite. Our friends at Sun Bum provided sun care education and a free sunscreen station, while the ladies at O’Neill Women’s brought some eco-awareness vibes by providing DIY up-cycling activities onsite each day, allowing booth visitors to create re-usable bags and headbands out of old O’Neill t-shirts! Basecamp’s ocean view also included complimentary coconut water provided by Zico and a zen-beach lounge with natural fibered seating and an organic + chemical free futon from The Futon Shop!
B4BC Basecamp visitors also learned how to ‘Check One, Two’ at our outreach table where we educated all who came through about the importance of early detection + prevention. As a part of our educational materials we were stoked to be able to distribute copies of our new B4BC Basecamp health + wellness zine, which features beautiful photography, articles and health tips from B4BC team riders and our community. Check out the digital version HERE or pick one up at one of our partner stores nationwide in October.
In addition to the surf comp and B4BC Basecamp the festival featured a female-focused sponsor village that included live music, art, a pro-female skate contest, and more. Paul Mitchell, the title sponsor of the event, was braiding hair throughout the weekend in exchange for donations and generously fundraised over $1,300 to help support our outreach programs. Many thanks to Paul Mitchell and their stylists for the love!
Our B4BC team riders surfed exceptionally well this past weekend with Malia and Sage advancing to the quarterfinals and Courtney boasting runner-up honors. Additionally, Team B4BC rider Allysha Bergado took home a gold medal on the skateboard vert ramp sponsored by Active Ride Shop. Nice job, ladies!
All-in-all it was a fun and amazing weekend all-around. We want to thank our friends at ASA Entertainment for their continued support in giving us a platform to educate. Shout out of thanks to Sun Bum, O’Neill Women’s, Zico, and The Futon Shop for being such amazing partners. Thank you to Malia, Allysha and Team B4BC snowboarder Elena Hight for stopping by the booth to show their support. Lastly, many thanks to all of our volunteers…we couldn’t do this with out you!
The summer may be almost over, but our outreach is not! Keep up with our traveling educational outreach booth at the Vans US Open of Surfing all this week, and check out our event schedule to get involved and see where we’ll be next.
