Mammoth Mountain Whittier College Snow Jam
In it’s second year, the Whittier College Snow Jam promises to have students and action sports fans from all over Southern California clamoring for more! Last year, LA’s newest hip-hop darling (and train wreck!) Mickey Avalon blew fans away while riders from near and far threw down tricks that had the crowd wondering how’d they do that!?! Despite limited resources and time, the organizer’s dream of engaging the student body in the unique culture of Southern California and action sports was fully realized.
While last years soiree will be hard to beat considering the level of riding and musical talent, this year will undoubtedly do just that. With a generous grant from the school, and Mammoth Mountain’s backing, there will be four times more snow, and six features for the riders to choose from (two signature boxes, two handrails, a signature wallride, and a custom built enclosure over an existing urban feature!!). Design direction from Park Guru and Youth Action Director, Oren Tanzer and a generous purse will have the riders pushing their limits and blowing fans away.
This is your chance to get up close and personal at the Whittier College Snow Jam! Better yet, you’ll be supporting the students who live the lifestyle you represent as a portion of all sponsorship dollars will be dedicated to the growth of the Whittier Ski and Snowboard Club for years to come.
Event History:
In 2006, the grassroots event drew over 500 spectators and top Southern Californian riders such as Casey Timms, Kyle Loppicollo, and Corey Whetstone. The event was organized by Whittier student and aspiring snowboarder Kyle Grant as a means to raise student awareness regarding the vast recreational opportunities available in the Southern California region; and also as a means to revamp the colleges ski and snowboard club. Put on in under three weeks, Grant secured corporate sponsorships from Rockstar Energy Drinks, Odwalla Juices/ Vitamin Water, Goldenstate LTD, and Never Satisfied Productions. These sponsorships in combination with some hard work and vision enabled the event to go down with 10 tons of snow, lots of free product, complete with entertainment by four different groups including Mickey Avalon. Last years event was a huge success and organizers intend to continue throwing the event annually.
Event Description:
The event will return to Whittier this spring bigger, better, and whiter thanks to a generous contribution from the college. This year Grant, along with fellow student and Mammoth Mountain personality, Michael Gregory, was able to secure $6,000 dollars in funding from Whittier College. As a result, this year’s event will have four times the snow, bringing the total to 40 tons. This will allow a 70′ by 70’slope to be covered a foot thick. In close consultation with Oren Tanzer, Youth Action Director of Mammoth Mountain and upper management Mammoth will be a headline sponsor and will provide the features for the Snow Jam. The layout will consist of two signature boxes, two handrails, a signature wallride, and a custom built enclosure over an existing urban feature. With ample snow, a solid prize purse, and a laid back environment the event looks to draw some of California’s top riders including Corey Cronk, Chris Bradshaw, Mike Burton, Casey Timms, and many more.
