15th Annual Skate the Lake presented by Suja
August 16th/17th, 2019
On August 16th+17th B4BC hosted its 15th Annual Skate the Lake presented by Suja ! It was a record-breaking weekend, with over 100 registered participants! Tahoe’s finest grabbed their skateboards, longboards, roller skates, and bicycles to take on the 28-mile challenge. Riders experienced the ups and downs of the trail that followed Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River, much like the ups and downs many face in the battle against cancer. It was an inspiring event as so many came together in support of each other and breast cancer prevention.
Between everyone’s efforts leading up to and over the course of the event, we were able to raise nearly $40,000 that will go towards the organization’s education, prevention and survivorship programs!
On Friday, the community came together for a registration party at Commons Beach. DJ IJV kicked off the evening’s musical lineup while Mountain Lotus Yoga hosted a session with partygoers. We loved seeing everyone trying their hand at this experience, and then coming together at the end of the session to support one another both physically and mentally. Bands the New Donovans and GBrown Sound then took to the stage before our first awesome raffle of the weekend! Meanwhile, our silent auction was grabbing the attention of many with our extensive inventory of prizes from YETI COOLERS, TRAEGER GRILLS, THE NORTH FACE, VANS, GOPRO, IMPALA SKATES and BLENDTEC.
While Truth Cartel took over the tunes, some headed out to the water for a session of SUP yoga to challenge their skills off the land! Another popular activity at the venue was hosted by Arbor Skateboards. By making a donation, people had the chance to win an Arbor complete by flipping and landing a shoe onto a suspended skateboard deck. The next day, we saw some of skaters riding the route on their winnings! We then raffled out the last of our sick prizes for the day and local band Truckee Tribe played us out for the night. We’d like to give a big thank you to SUJA Organic, 10 Barrel Brewing Co., Notorious Pink Grenache, Flying Embers Kombucha, AND a big Hi-5 to The Buck Stops Here for the delicious BBQ.
The next morning, we all met at 64 Acres, registered our final riders, and loaded up the shuttles to the start point at Sugar Pine Point. Love and gratitude was shared alongside some inspiring words from event co-founder Chuck Buckly of Tahoe Longboards. Our riders then took off for the first seven-mile stretch towards West Shore Market. We all recollected and hydrated with Suja juice and kombucha. Clif Bars and electrolytes replenished the participants and then we were off again! After another hydration stop at 64 Acres, everyone met up one last time at Squaw Valley. We were joined by additional riders who chose to drop in for the last seven miles of the route.
As a collective unit, we finally made it to the finish line at Commons Beach to celebrate the amazing journey we all had just shared! Everyone was happy to kick it by the lake and we closed the event with acknowledgements and awards for our top fundraisers and a huge raffle for all our participants.
We’d like to give a huge shout-out to our top fundraisers – Cali Vail, Jason Knight, and Charles Carbonne, as well as the top team, the Quad Squad! We’d also like to give a special thanks to Aloha Growing Young for the skate deck awards!
