DEW TOUR // LONG BEACH 2019
Words by: Zo Pattin
For the third summer in a row, B4BC rolled up to Long Beach Dew Tour with our Traveling Education Booth and enjoyed four days of spreading breast cancer awareness, raising money for our survivor retreats, and of course, watching some of the raddest athletes bust out their best moves on the two courses the contest offered. It was an exciting weekend, as skaters from all over the Dewnited States and the world gathered to compete in the first Olympic qualifier for skateboarding.
On day one, B4BC stepped into the floral jungle of Dew Tour, decorated by this year’s event artist Andrew Cooper. His zany flowers covered the courses and venue, turning Long Beach into his own giant canvas. Both the men and women battled it out in the street quarterfinals and the women in park semis. Meanwhile, we began our weekend of education and hosted our first daily raffle for the event. Stationed by the public course, we got to witness local skate talent alongside the professional contests. After the event closed for the day, B4BC headed downtown with our education materials and prizes for a special silent auction and raffle. Several of our gorgeous art boards found new homes, but the best part was dancing the night away to charismatic 80’s cover band Flashpants.

Day two brought on another day of bra pong and education, and we brought out the Syck Trix balance board for some extra fun. We had plenty of little shredders come in and show us their best moves while others were encouraged to build their skills and confidence on the training board. Over at the courses, the pro ladies took to the street course for semis and the men to the bowl for park quarter finals.

With the arrival of the weekend, we had a jam packed day on Saturday. It was a special day for B4BC as we gathered a group of skaters together for a very special Tribute Ride, the first of many at summer Dew Tour. Over 35 Skaters met up at the B4BC booth and pinked up in feather boas and bandanas before heading over to the lagoon to skate a lap in honor of those who couldn’t be there with us. It was great to see so much support as we skated in unity for the cause. At the contest, men wrapped up semis in both park and street as we headed into finals day on Sunday.

Closing out the weekend, things got heated over at the men’s street final. Aurelien Giraud took the win over Sora Shirai by less than half a point. Big congrats to B4BC ambassador Leticia Bufoni for taking second in street, with Pamela Rosa in first and Candy Jacobs rounding out the podium at third. Despite having trouble with her ankle, she fought through the pain to success and we are so proud of her! Full results can be found at dewtour.com.

Over the course of the event, over $5,000 to go towards our traveling educational booth and young survivor retreats, and we educated 1000’s of young people about the importance information of early detection, leading a healthy lifestyle, and to self-advocate!. A big thank you to Dew Tour for all the love and support and to YETI, Traeger Grills, Blendtec, and Caravan Outpost for providing all the items for our silent auction.
