B4BC is pleased to announce that two outstanding Parkway South H.S. Students in Manchester, MO are taking their B4BC Senior Marketing Project to Nationals in Orlando, FL next week April 28 – May 1!
The ladies, Nadja Strikovic and Jenny Parra, produced a B4BC education awareness event at their local mountain (Hidden Valley Resort) back in January as part of a “Hooked on Health” week. The production of the event was to fulfill their senior project for the DECA organization. DECA helps students with an interest in business to develop skills and competence for marketing careers, to build self-esteem, to experience leadership and to practice community service.
Jenny and Nadja’s combined efforts landed them a stellar second place finish at their regional DECA competition back in February and are now headed to Orlando for the National competition next week.
B4BC wishes Jenny and Nadja all the best at Nationals and sends them sincere thanks for choosing our organization for this special project and ultimately helping us spread the good word to their peers and community! We also want to thank Hidden Valley Resort for helping the ladies along the way and providing a great destination for it to all go down!
Our B4BC Senior Project
by Jenny Parra and Nadja Strikovic
Working with Boarding for Breast Cancer, our school, and Hidden Valley Ski Resort, we created a promotional and informational event for B4BC. After writing a proposal to CORO leadership, we were able to receive a grant of $1,420 to go towards the impletion of our project. The main goal was to promote the organization during Hidden Valley’s first ever Hooked on Health Weekend. Before this event took place, we held a week of breast cancer awareness at our school, Parkway South.
At South, we set up a table in our lunch area that had B4BC posters, t-shirts, bracelets, stickers, and donation cans. We also promoted Monica’s story by placing pink cards on every table in the commons telling the story. We did this for two days, and were able to raise funds from donations and t-shirt sales. We even had everyone who bought a t-shirt wear them on January 19, the day before our event at Hidden Valley Most students had never heard of B4BC or even thought about breast cancer as something that affects young adults. In addition to our table, we created flyers to promote the event, as well as bring in money. We placed the flyers at locations around our area and at our school, places that teenagers would be most likely to pick them up. All of this was to promote Hooked on Health Weekend and B4BC before that Saturday. Anyone who brought these flyers with them to Hidden Valley would be supporting the cause. 10% of whatever money these flyers brought in went to B4BC.
At the Hidden Valley event, held on Saturday January 21, our main goal was to promote living a healthy and active lifestyle to the community. Several other organizations such as Logan Chiropractic, Monster Energy, 105.7 the POINT, and the D.A.R.E. corvette were set up around the resort that day along with our Boarding For Breast Cancer booth to inform the community about breast cancer. At our tent, we set up B4BC self-exam cards, informational cards, B4BC stickers, and posters with statistics and information about the organization itself. We also created B4BC t-shirts that we sold for $12. Along with t-shirts we sold the pink B4BC awareness bands for $1 plus donations. We were there from 8am-6pm taking donations and making the community aware of breast cancer prevention and B4BC. That day, we brought in $1,969.00 with our flyers, and we received a check for $200 from Hidden Valley to donate to B4BC.
Doing this project helped us to teach what we had learned to our friends and community. We were able to promote living an active lifestyle and early detection as the best prevention and give back to our community. We took this project to nationals for DECA, an association of marketing students, and placed 2nd in that competition. It is a project that started around November of 2006 and that we are still working on. Our final competition is April 27 in Orlando FL. Wish us luck!
