(November 11, 2011) Frank Alvarado, owner of Vida Loca Skateboards, will be holding the second annual “Ride The Tide” skate event in Manteca, CA, tomorrow. After having participated in B4BC’s Skate The Lake event in Tahoe to support a close friend in her fight against breast cancer, Frank was inspired to start “Ride The Tide,” a 13.1 mile ride through Manteca along Tidewater Bikeway, to raise money for B4BC. So far, over 70 people have committed to this year’s ride, sponsored by Vitamin Water, Alvarado’s Vida Loca Skateboards, Vertical Smile Skateboards, Fayuca Skateboards, Manteca Optometry, Jill Paddack Photography and CCS Mail Order. In addition to the main event, there will be a silent auction, raffle prizes, BBQ, and live music.
Frank’s passion for supporting breast cancer charities began when he started attending Skate The Lake as a spectator in 2007. He planned on participating in a just a portion of the 2008 Lake Tahoe ride, however he became motivated to do much more when he received news that a dear friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“On June 24th 2008- I got a call from my mother that said that Katie McKenzie was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and is the opening rounds in the fight of her life…The day before I talked to Katie I was planning on showing up for Skate the Lake with a few friends and doing a few miles before I head to the after party-After talking to Katie that day, I decided that I would do all 27 miles of that race…I had originally planned on “Skating the Lake” alone, But after my phone call with Katie, My outlook for the event took a life of its own, and a few phone calls later, a TEAM was assembled. I will now be “Rolling” up to the Skate the Lake event with a group of family and friends that want to help out and show support…We are all going up there with the struggles that Katie faces day to day, and on August 23rd for that short amount of time-she will be with all of us as we make our way to the finish line.”
