Summer X Games 14 was hustling and bustling with plenty of fun and action for everyone; and though Moto X, Rally Cars, BMX and Skateboarding were the main attractions at the Home Depot Center, the B4BC booth was a popular attraction in the Team ESPN tent with heavy traffic flowing throughout the weekend! The Team ESPN tent is ESPN’s corporate outreach space dedicated to giving like-minded nonprofits the platform to spread their message to the X Games audience. This year’s tent included ESPN’s Jimmy V Foundation, Boarding For Breast Cancer, Adaptive Action Sports, Stoked Mentoring, and the Women’s Sports Foundation.
B4BC’s outreach was in full effect over the weekend with hundreds of young people cruising through the tent and stopping at the B4BC table to learn how to do a breast self-exam (BSE). We also had a lot of men stop by to learn how to do their BSE’s and to gain some knowledge that could help them keep their lady friends in check with their health!
On Friday at the Games it was “Girl’s Day”, so there was a full schedule of “female” happenings, including girls “Get On Board” skate and bmx clinics, female athlete autograph signings, and of course women’s vert and street competitions. B4BC had the opportunity to contribute health literature and pink bracelets to the “Girl’s Day” gift bags, so it was cool to see all of the ladies rocking their pink bands before they even visited our booth!
A few more memorable moments from the weekend included a young man who came by our booth to
share with us his beautiful new tribute tattoo. The tat was a portrait of his mother who is a breast cancer survivor and it meant a lot to him to be able to stop by and share that with us!
Another cool moment came from a young survivor named Becca, who stopped by to reassure everyone that early detection is key by journaling her experience with breast cancer in our B4BC “Share Your Story” book. It was also great to see a number of mothers bringing their daughters by the booth to get them educated on the significance of early detection and leading an active lifestyle. A David Beckham sighting also brought excitement to the day, in hopes that he would stop by the B4BC booth-sadly for us he did not, but we’ll catch you next time, David!
All in all it was another successful and important weekend for B4BC’s booth and we would like to send
many thanks out to ESPN for once again providing us with an incredible platform to spread our message!
Also, a special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers who came out to lend us a hand. Thank you Kayla, Ella, Lana, Eliane, Andrea, Erica, Dustin, Jen, Brianna, Julie, Hoai, and Lisa-we couldn’t do this without you!
