B4BC’s 12Th Annual Skate the Coast
Presented by Suja Organic
On Oct 11 and 12 supporters of all ages and abilities turned the Southern California coast pink for B4BC’s 12th annual Skate the Coast presented by Suja Organic! Skateboarders, bikers, roller skaters, and even a scooter and runner took on the 19-mile challenge from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach in the collective push for breast cancer education and prevention. Between the efforts of a whopping 160 participants, over $52,000 was raised – the MOST EVER at a B4BC event!
We kicked off the event with a registration party on Friday night with our friends at Arbor Venice. Attendees were greeted with a walkway to the party decorated with all the beautiful art boards various artists have so graciously donated for auction. Awaiting everyone was unlimited Suja juice, sliders from TRAEGER, and a bar stocked with goodies from 10 Barrel Brewing Co, Notorious Pink Grenache, Flying Embers Hard Kombucha and Venice Duck. Meanwhile, Dane Drewis provided us with some acoustic music to keep up the chill vibe. The night ended with one of our legendary raffles and silent auctions, and party-goers went home to rest up for the big skate the next day.
On Saturday morning, we all geared up for the big push at Veterans Park and shuttled up to the start line in Santa Monica. After some safety talks and lots of high fives the skate-bike-rollers took off for the first leg. Everyone met back up at Arbor Venice for the first hydration stop where Suja, water, and snacks provided by Thrive Market + Clif Bar refueled the athletes. Thanks to the crew at Arbor for waiting with open arms (and unlocked doors). A few quick photos were taken and it was time to roll again to Marina Del Rey where the Suja Organic van was waiting with ice cold juice and energy shots.
Skaters came in HOT to the second hydration station as it was a sunny and 75 Southern California day. Families and friends cooled off, caught their breath and reapplied Sunbum sunscreen. Roller skaters and long-boarders showed off different tricks and a few kids showed us their donut skills in the parking lot before heading to the third stop!
For the first time in Skate the Coast History participants were allowed to drop in half way through the skate at Dockweiler State Beach for the remainder of the route. Here skaters were met by the Impala Skate crew’s tent, providing shade for all. Plenty of professional athletes were in the mix with Shannon Dunn Downing on her roller skates, Jen O’Brien doing laybacks with Cara Beth Burnside and we even had Pro Skier/ Announcer Colby James West do a wheelie drive by! 20 more participants, lots of photos , endless smiles and 30 minutes later we were off again! In the home stretch everyone stopped for a quick break in the grass in Hermosa Beach before the last two miles to the finish line!
We ended our journey at Dive N’ Surf with an epic finish line block party! The finish line was lined with sponsor booths Suja Juice, Thrive Market, Autonomy Skateboards and tasty food was served by the Beyond Meat Food Truck and Traeger Grills BBQ. Refreshing drinks provided by 10 Barrel Brew and Notorious Pink Grenache. Everyone was able to relax, refuel and enjoy some killer music from Truth Cartel and The Sendaways. We hosted another auction and raffle with endless prizes from Yeti, The North Face, Arbor Skateboards, Impala Roller Skates, Sector 9, Globe Skateboards, Vans, Protec Helmets, GoPro, Traeger Grills, Von Zipper, Caravan Outpost and many, many more. We’d like to give a special shout-out to our top fundraisers and the unmatched passion they put towards this weekend. There was so much love and positivity coming from everyone that made this such an amazing event! We are constantly blown away by the generosity and dedication of our athletes.
Thank you to our sponsors, partners, volunteers, participants, friends and families.
We can’t wait to see you next year for lucky number 13!
