B4BC’s 11th annual Skate The Lake 28-mile longboard-a-thon in Lake Tahoe last weekend was an unprecedented success, with almost 100 skaters raising over $30K for Boarding for Breast Cancer’s education, prevention and support programs! We had an amazing weekend filled with tons of fun and an overwhelming amount of love and support from the Tahoe community.
We kicked off our weekend with a registration party at The Art Haus in Tahoe City. As skaters signed up for the weekend, they were treated to dancing and music by Greg Brown, Flip the Record, Actors Killed Lincoln and the local break dancing crew as well as dinner provided by Moe’s BBQ, Mountain Valley Meats, The Bridgetender and Marty’s Cafe. Raffles and a silent auction rounded out the night, getting people stoked for Saturday’s activities!
Saturday started bright and early with skaters pushing a total of 28 miles along the shores of Lake Tahoe. Some skated for loved ones while others wanted to join in on the movement to support a healthy, active lifestyle. We were stoked to be joined by Team B4BC snowboarder Elena Hight who decided to hop on a skateboard to join in on the fun!
We want to give a shoutout to our top three fundraisers this year who made a huge impact. Our number one fundraiser was 12-year-old Katie Lyssand, who went door-to-door to local shops and businesses asking for their support. Katie raised over $3,000 and we are so stoked on her amazing efforts! Because of her dedication, Katie won herself a brand new GoPro Hero 4 and a new Tahoe Longboards board.
The number two place went to the Knight Family who came back for their 10th Skate The Lake and raised over $2,500! At age 8, Colin Knight was our youngest rider to participate in the skate. Rounding out our top three was last years top fundraiser, Steve Gatlin, who raised over $1,500!
We are always so amazed by the love and support in the Lake Tahoe community and want to send out a huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this event so wonderful! We couldn’t do it without you all.
As always thank you so much to Skate the Lake creators Curt Sterner & Chuck Buckley, as well as photographers Allison Smith and Kathleen Gasperini for documenting the weekend. Thanks again to our on-site EMT’s Kolina Coe and Jason and Lindsay Knight, as well as our awesome volunteers Maggie Gonzalez, Mike & Phil from Tahoe Longboards, JoAnn Rawkmom Gillespie, and Matt Gaudio & Sara Thompson from Silly Girl Skateboards.
