ESPN’s Summer X Games 12
Los Angeles, CA
August 3-6
ESPN’s X Games never ceases to amaze B4BC as year in and year out the Games prove to be an unparalleled platform for our outreach efforts as we educate and raise awareness to thousands of new and old friends from across the world! The amount of incredible people that came up to learn, ask how they can get involved, donate, share inspirational and touching stories, or to just thank B4BC for being onsite is positively overwhelming! We thank each and every one of our visitors for educating themselves and for sharing our compassion to make a difference!
A few highlights that come to mind from the 4 day event include a woman in her early 20s coming up to the booth and being very excited that she found us! She told us that she thought of us when she was taking a shower that morning and it reminded her that she needed to find our booth, so she could pick up a shower self-exam card and learn all of the details that go along with doing a monthly self-breast-exam! Apparently, she had seen us last year, but was a little too shy to stop by. We’re all glad that she got over her shyness and that we were there to give her some important tools for early detection and prevention! The lovely girl even took a handful of shower exam cards to give to her girl-friends what a great friend!
Another highlight was that, among all of our lovely volunteers, we had a 13 year old girl volunteer to help fulfill a school project. She chose and wanted to get involved with B4BC because her favorite teacher in school is currently recovering from breast cancer. It meant a lot to her to educate herself, help B4BC out, pay tribute to her teacher, and to learn our message of early detection + active lifestyle = best prevention to present through to her classmates. Wow, what an awesome young lady!
Other highlights included several mothers recognizing the importance of bringing their teenage daughters over to learn as well as to gather some info for themselves! Good job moms! Also, B4BC would like to note that the hit of the booth this year (besides the jelly breast molds of course) were the beautiful Live, Love, Surf necklaces by Billabong. Those things were selling like hotcakes with proceeds benefiting B4BC, so thank you Billabong!
These are only a few of many memorable moments from this year’s X Games. (Please read our survivor stories page to read a few more touching encounters from the event.)
X Games 12 will go down as another positive year of impact for B4BC and it may also go down as the year of Travis Pastrana as he dominated by winning three Gold medals in Rally Car Racing, Freestyle Motocross, and sticking the first ever double-backflip in competition to win best trick!
Pastrana’s double-backflip was only one of several never before landed tricks. As skateboarding legend Danny Way landed a back-flip on the mega ramp, taking home the Gold for the 3rd consecutive year in Skateboarding Big Air, and BMX athlete Kevin Robinson maneuvered a historic Double Flair to win BMX Freestyle Best Trick. Other big winners include Chad Kagy, Bucky Lasek, and Sandro Dias. On the womens side Cara Beth Burnside continued to dominate Women’s Skateboarding with another gold medal performance in this year’s Vert finals and Elissa Steamer made history by winning her third straight Women’s Skateboard Street Gold Medal! Whew, what an exciting Games, the amount of progression going on is insane. It’s an exciting time for Action Sports and we’re more than appreciative to have the opportunity to be a part of it!
Sincere thanks go out to ESPN for providing B4BC with the opportunity to spread breast cancer awareness and our message of Early Detection + Active Lifestyle = Best Prevention to their ever so enthusiastic attendees! Your continued support is truly appreciated and very important in helping us achieve our educational outreach goals!
Also, many thanks to our brilliant volunteers Jen, Pam, Heather, Ashley, and Danielle, we couldn’t do this without you! And a special thank you and much love to our MVP volunteer Christine G. for all of her unparalleled time and efforts in the last two weeks!
Please stay tuned for more B4BC activities coming soon. In the meantime please check out our health section and educate yourself on the importance of early detection and leading an active lifestyle!
Lots of Love,
B4BC
