2016 marks 20 YEARS of outreach, support, and events across the nation and we think that calls for celebration! You only turn 20 once and to celebrate, we’re going back to our roots. We’re heading to Sierra at Tahoe in Lake Tahoe, CA to bring back the iconic Boarding for Breast Cancer Snowboard + Music Festival Shredding the Love for 20 Years!
The inspiration behind B4BC was a young woman named Monica Steward, co-founder of Bonfire, who at was diagnosed with breast cancer the age of 26 and passed away in 1996 at the age of 29. B4BC’s founders — all leaders in the snowboarding industry and pro riders— wanted to create a space to celebrate Monica’s passions, snowboarding and music, while communicating the importance of awareness and education for young people. Thus, the B4BC Snowboard + Music Festival was born.
The first ever festival was held in 1996 and included music from the Beastie Boys and an over-capacity crowd of over 5,000 people. Over the next 7 years the festival grew and boasted acts such as Blink 182, Linkin Park, The Foo Fighters, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Luscious Jackson, and more.
Over their lifetime, B4BC’s Snowboard + Music Festivals raised over $600,000 for beneficiaries that included the Breast Cancer Fund, Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research and regional breast cancer support organizations.
Festival Details:
- “Neither the cosmic-kids-stuff psych-rock that’s everywhere these days nor the overly tried-and-true blues-rock that’s never gone away, EFG puts the power in power trio.” — Kevin BronsonBringing to the B4BC Festival an adrenaline pumped thrill ride, these bona fide rockers — Imaad Wasif (lowercase, alaska!, The Folk Implosion and Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Josh Garza (Secret Machines) and Tom Biller (musician and producer Liars, Warpaint, Kate Nash) — are all about high skill, guitar-led music, full of snarling riffs, mindful lyrics, and dreamy psychedelia. In the time they’ve been a band they’ve released two epic conceptual rock EP’s, including a blistering cover of Scott Walker’s “The Electrician,” of which Walker himself said, “Amazing. Both song and video.”
At the heart of EFG’s new single ‘Outlier b/w Suzanne’ is a primitivism and warmth that makes it the most evolved of all their music to date. “If a song can come from visions and dreams”, says Wasif, “then Suzanne is the white-mare, the meta specter of conscious and subconscious love and hate, tinted through a Leonard Cohen afterworld with Garza & Biller’s rhythms as its thundering hoof-beat.”
- Other Band Performances by Panic Is Perfect, a Bay-area based band known for live shows that captivate audiences with instrumental sagas, high-energy percussion, and soulful grooves that make it nearly impossible to stand still; and The Family Crest, a San Francisco-based 7-piece group that makes music on an epic scale, with a multitude of instruments, amazing vocals, and voted NPR’s favorite last year
