Barrett Christy & snowboarding go hand-in-hand and we are stoked to have support from such an outstanding woman! Barrett has supported B4BC and our mission since the beginning and coincidentally 2016 marks big years for both of us. Not only is B4BC celebrating our 20th Anniversary, Barrett is celebrating 20 years of her Gnu B-Pro board. Check out the article from Transworld below to learn more about Barrett's accomplishments & the Transworld Legend Award.
The lemon is such a kitchen staple. We use it to flavor our morning tea, to add a kick to a glass of water, and to liven up recipe upon recipe, but the lemon’s uses go far past just that. We want to shed some light on a few you might not be aware of — and we encourage you to do the same!
How do you choose between the delicious lavender body lotion and the mango-vanilla skin salve? Or the cherry lip gloss and the peppermint lip balm? We are here to help! American women put an average of 168 chemicals on their bodies each day through personal care and beauty products, isn’t that crazy?! Living non-toxic is one of our 8 Steps to Stomp Out Breast Cancer, meaning we think it’s SUPER important to understand what exactly we’re putting on our precious skin.
There is no better way to celebrate Boarding for Breast Cancer’s (B4BC’s) 20th Anniversary than with a fundraiser featuring the 20 Most Iconic Snowboarding Images of All Time, and an opportunity to own a piece of history. Trevor Graves, founder of NEMO Design and celebrated snowboard photographer, and Kathleen Gasperini, co-founder and Executive Director of B4BC and pioneer of snowboarding journalism, have teamed-up once again to create a unique photo and art exhibition in honor of snowboarding and B4BC’s 20th Anniversary.
By now, you probably know that plastics can be hugely problematic for our health and mother nature. Living Green is one of our 8 Stomps to Step Out Breast Cancer so we believe that it is always better to choose materials such as glass, stainless steel, or organic fabrics. However… plastics are almost everywhere and can be really difficult to avoid. They're in practically every kind of household product: food containers, cleaning supplies, kitchenware, and much more. The good news is that not all plastics are created equal, and some are safer than others.
Pomegranate is without a doubt one of our favorite foods this time of year! Sweet and tart. Tangy and juicy. Delicious. That's the pleasure you get when you crack open a fresh pomegranate and suck on the deep red seeds of the luscious fruit. Or when you simply crack open a bottle of pure pomegranate juice and take a satisfying gulp. Not only are pomegranates tasty, but they're also full of natural health benefits.
2016 is here and we’re all about getting off to a good start. Detox is a very popular word this time of year but what does "detox" mean to you? Most people think of fasting, dieting, or some crazy cleanse. Although all these do involve some sort of detox, they tend to be a temporary fix for a much larger problem. Detoxing is all about removing nasty, often cancer-causing toxins from our bodies in order to help live an overall healthier life!
Winter means cold & SNOW (can you tell we're excited?) but for many, winter also means cold + flu season. It is almost instinctual for us to head to the doctor’s office to get meds when we come down with a sickness. However, the antibiotics often prescribed usually wind up doing much more harm than good, killing off healthy bacteria and the bad pathogens. While antibiotics do have their place in medicine, why not think about reaching for a natural solution when you can? Mother Nature has some pretty amazing things to offer us!
It’s that time of year again; the time when everyone is making resolutions… or the complete opposite. It seems that many people these days are quick to reject the idea of New Year's resolutions because it brings up memories of failed attempts and hopeful do-overs. We get that. But what if the concept of a New Year's resolution isn't actually at fault? What if it's about the resolutions you choose to make?
Chances are you’re either on your phone or have it somewhere nearby… We’re all guilty. It’s time to put that little gadget to GREAT use by downloading the free B4BC app! A healthy environment equates to healthier human beings and a reduced cancer risk. The environment has always been a part of the B4BC mission. During this crucial time of the COP21 talks in Paris, while our global leaders are chasing down a climate deal that could radically effect the world, we would like to share the news of how the environment will play a larger role in 2016 for B4BC as well. Just like every other business, whether it be for-profit or non-profit, it is our responsibility to seek solutions towards limiting and erasing our organization’s carbon-footprint all together. Here’s why: So far the world is more than halfway towards exceeding what scientist have said is the catastrophic warming mark of 2 degrees Celsius. According to a recent report from Time Magazine, to even have a 50-50 chance at keeping the global temperature
The holidays are upon us and that probably means some sort of added stress... Between traveling, shopping, cooking, entertaining, or all of the above, our heads tend to get a bit bogged down this time of the year. It's super important to take the time to de-stress and re-center ourselves. Loving yourself is one of our 8 Steps to Stomp Out Breast Cancer and combined with a positive attitude, self love can help to assure good overall health— physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Meditation is one of our favorite ways to show our bides some self lovin'.
As we head into the holiday season, many of us begin feeling the mounting pressure to manage it all – travel, gifts, guests and amazing food. With memories of childhood gently nudging us to create magic for our own families, we often push ourselves to the edge, feeling run-down and sometimes even sick. Our immune systems become taxed due to a lack of sleep, lowered vitamin D levels, disrupted exercise routines, and poor nutrition. We absolutely LOVE the holidays but not if it means we can’t join in on the festivities and fun. This year we're taking a hint from our friend Kris Kelly over at Goofy Foot Foods! She recommends starting each day with a positive intention and a cup of Immunity Boosting Tea, to help your body stay healthy and set the tone for “Balanced Abundance.”
Holiday season is upon us and we all know there’s nothing traditional about processed foods. But cooking everything from scratch can be tough too. You don’t have to throw in the towel on your health routine just because it’s the holidays or give up your traditional Thanksgiving recipes – and it doesn’t mean you have to make everything from scratch either.
We get it, us gals love our beauty products! Whether you wear makeup everyday or just on special occasions, there is a good chance that you are using some sort of product that includes toxins that are not-so-hot for your body. We often don't realize just how many different products we are lathering on our bodies each day so it's important to take note of exactly what is in the products we do use.
Healthy eating is one of the most important of our 8 Steps to Stomp Out Breast Cancer. Making small, healthy changes to your diet is scientifically linked to reducing your breast cancer risk and there is not better time to start than the present. Grubbing on fruits and vegetables that contain high fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients can help fight the disease.
That's a wrap on B4BC's 6th Annual Check One, Two Campus Tour! The B4BC educational outreach posted up on ten different campuses, providing preventative health information to students while partnering with campus departments & clubs to give out wellness materials that highlight the benefits of early detection and a healthy, active lifestyle.
It seems like everywhere we turn, science is telling us hormone disruptors are dangerous, can hurt our health, and can even increase our breast cancer risk. But let’s back up. What exactly IS a hormone disruptor, what are the problems associated with them, and is there anything we can do to really to minimize our exposure? Let's break it down.
Today we’re sharing a snippet from B4BC Wellness Ambassador, breast cancer survivor, and our good friend Megan Pischke! If you know us, you know we love avocados and so does Megan. The health benefits of avocados include stopping the growth of cancer, while supporting the body’s natural defense mechanisms. A nutritional powerhouse, avocados provide a combination of comprehensive cancer fighters such as, carotenoids, vitamin E, lutein, and oleic acid. Naturally high in (healthy) fats, rich in fiber and loaded with nutrients – eating avocados make perfect sense and so does using them for all of their other other amazing properties. Megan is giving us 15 more reasons to add this superfood to our grocery lists!
The last step on our 8 Steps to Step out Breast Cancer is LOVE YOURSELF. Now, just because it’s the last step on our list, don’t think it is any less important. Loving ourselves is one of the most important things we can do to live a happy, healthy life! Loving yourself can help to assure good overall health— physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. We love being inspired by others and yoga girl Rachel Brathen sure is an extra big dose of inspiration. Check out what she has to say about self love & why it’s so important!
We’re keeping it super simple after a long holiday weekend! As we shake off the indulgences from Halloween and start a new month, there’s never been a better time to load up on vegetables and particularly green veggies. Our favorite and most easily digestible way to have them is in a tall glass (or three) of green juice.
The Environmental Working Group releases a well-known list every year of the Dirty Dozen fruits and vegetables to avoid due to GMOs and pesticides, but now they've added a list of Dirty Dozen chemicals for cancer prevention! On that list are PFCs, used as stain-repellent coatings in furniture, and PBDEs, a type of fire retardant used to treat upholstered furniture, mattresses and pillows until it was pulled from the market due to high toxicity levels.
Boarding For Breast Cancer (B4BC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation dedicated to providing breast cancer education, prevention and support programs for young people and the action sports community at large.
