Climate change may seem to many of us a challenge too daunting to tackle directly through our own actions. But there is one small change each of us can make to play our part: We can shift our diets so they're healthier and more environmentally sustainable. The type of food we choose to eat makes up a large part of our personal carbon footprint. The meat and dairy that make up 22 percent of diets in the developed world emit large amounts of greenhouse gases — particularly dangerous methane and nitrous oxide. But there's a more understated food group that has a relatively tiny carbon footprint and is highly nutritious and rich in protein and essential micronutrients: pulses.
For the second year in a row, Shaun White’s Air + Style brought snow to the city! We had an amazing weekend onsite at Expo Park in Los Angeles where over 40,000 snow enthusiasts and music lovers converged for a weekend of festivities. B4BC was smack in the middle of the action, spreading the word about early detection and prevention.
Women’s Skateboarding Alliance (WSA), the global management and consulting agency dedicated to authentically representing the industry voice of women’s skateboarding will be producing the inaugural Women’s Skateboard Street competition at X Games Oslo, February 24-26. We just wrapped our 9th annual winter Chasing Sunshine retreat for breast cancer survivors in Aspen, Colorado—a weekend full of positivity, wellness and healing. We are honored to have be able to fund scholarships for eight breast cancer survivors to attend this retreat, hosted by pro snowboarder and breast cancer survivor Megan Pischke, to connect these women with a nature-based wellness and sustainability experience that enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship. Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer in the Fall of 2012, ironically after hosting a B4BC surf and wellness retreat for breast cancer survivors.
This week we're bringing you an article from our friend Emily Hightower. Emily was our amazing nutritionist, chef, and yoga instructor at this month's Chasing Sunshine retreat in Aspen, Colorado and brought in all kinds of health and wellness knowledge along with her delicious foods! B4BC was honored to be included in the 2015 SIMA Image Awards last night as one of SIMA’s Humanitarian Fund nonprofit partners in Anaheim, CA. The evening was full of surf industry icons, as well as everyone’s favorite brands—including longtime supporters and partners of B4BC like AMUSE SOCIETY, Volcom, SUN BUM and Mizu.
We were honored to be part of an inspiring night at The Women’s Image Networks (WIN) Awards, Wednesday evening, February 10, 2016 in Los Angeles, for B4BC’s nominated documentary Chasing Sunshine, co-directed and featuring our Wellness Ambassador, Megan Pischke. The documentary follows, Megan, who is a former pro snowboarder, through her breast cancer diagnosis, the rigors of treatment, and a very raw account that hasn’t been seen before.
Unfortunately, hormone imbalance and estrogen dominance can greatly increase our breast cancer risk. However, we've also got some good news: reducing the effects of many of these factors is well within our influence, who knew! What you eat regulates many aspects of body function, including the secretion of certain hormones & your diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight, ward of different diseases and sicknesses, keep our hormones balanced and our estrogen at healthy levels . In addition to reaping hormonal rewards through food, women can also drink their way to health with some easy, potent beverages that can have a big impact on the endocrine system. These recipes are simple, affordable, and — yes — totally tasty.
That's a wrap on an amazing 4 days at X Games Aspen 2016! The crazy weather conditions didn't stop anyone from coming out to watch the world's best winter athletes compete all weekend long. Thousands of X Games goers came by the B4BC booth in the ESPN Corporate Citizenship tent to get autograph signings by Team B4BC riders Jamie Anderson, Elena Hight and Kaitlyn Farrington, take the B4BC Prevention Pledge, and learn how to Check One, Two. We’re all about teaching the youth the best ways to prevent breast cancer and this was an amazing place to do just that!
Barrett Christy & snowboarding go hand-in-hand and we are stoked to have support from such an outstanding woman! Barrett has supported B4BC and our mission since the beginning and coincidentally 2016 marks big years for both of us. Not only is B4BC celebrating our 20th Anniversary, Barrett is celebrating 20 years of her Gnu B-Pro board. Check out the article from Transworld below to learn more about Barrett's accomplishments & the Transworld Legend Award.
The lemon is such a kitchen staple. We use it to flavor our morning tea, to add a kick to a glass of water, and to liven up recipe upon recipe, but the lemon’s uses go far past just that. We want to shed some light on a few you might not be aware of — and we encourage you to do the same!
How do you choose between the delicious lavender body lotion and the mango-vanilla skin salve? Or the cherry lip gloss and the peppermint lip balm? We are here to help! American women put an average of 168 chemicals on their bodies each day through personal care and beauty products, isn’t that crazy?! Living non-toxic is one of our 8 Steps to Stomp Out Breast Cancer, meaning we think it’s SUPER important to understand what exactly we’re putting on our precious skin.
There is no better way to celebrate Boarding for Breast Cancer’s (B4BC’s) 20th Anniversary than with a fundraiser featuring the 20 Most Iconic Snowboarding Images of All Time, and an opportunity to own a piece of history. Trevor Graves, founder of NEMO Design and celebrated snowboard photographer, and Kathleen Gasperini, co-founder and Executive Director of B4BC and pioneer of snowboarding journalism, have teamed-up once again to create a unique photo and art exhibition in honor of snowboarding and B4BC’s 20th Anniversary.
By now, you probably know that plastics can be hugely problematic for our health and mother nature. Living Green is one of our 8 Stomps to Step Out Breast Cancer so we believe that it is always better to choose materials such as glass, stainless steel, or organic fabrics. However… plastics are almost everywhere and can be really difficult to avoid. They're in practically every kind of household product: food containers, cleaning supplies, kitchenware, and much more. The good news is that not all plastics are created equal, and some are safer than others.
Pomegranate is without a doubt one of our favorite foods this time of year! Sweet and tart. Tangy and juicy. Delicious. That's the pleasure you get when you crack open a fresh pomegranate and suck on the deep red seeds of the luscious fruit. Or when you simply crack open a bottle of pure pomegranate juice and take a satisfying gulp. Not only are pomegranates tasty, but they're also full of natural health benefits.
2016 is here and we’re all about getting off to a good start. Detox is a very popular word this time of year but what does "detox" mean to you? Most people think of fasting, dieting, or some crazy cleanse. Although all these do involve some sort of detox, they tend to be a temporary fix for a much larger problem. Detoxing is all about removing nasty, often cancer-causing toxins from our bodies in order to help live an overall healthier life!
Winter means cold & SNOW (can you tell we're excited?) but for many, winter also means cold + flu season. It is almost instinctual for us to head to the doctor’s office to get meds when we come down with a sickness. However, the antibiotics often prescribed usually wind up doing much more harm than good, killing off healthy bacteria and the bad pathogens. While antibiotics do have their place in medicine, why not think about reaching for a natural solution when you can? Mother Nature has some pretty amazing things to offer us!
It’s that time of year again; the time when everyone is making resolutions… or the complete opposite. It seems that many people these days are quick to reject the idea of New Year's resolutions because it brings up memories of failed attempts and hopeful do-overs. We get that. But what if the concept of a New Year's resolution isn't actually at fault? What if it's about the resolutions you choose to make?
Chances are you’re either on your phone or have it somewhere nearby… We’re all guilty. It’s time to put that little gadget to GREAT use by downloading the free B4BC app! The app teaches you how to perform your own breast self exam, shares our 8 Steps to Stomp Out Breast Cancer, and so much more. The best part? The B4BC app allows you to set a monthly breast self-exam reminder. According to Johns Hopkins Medical Center, “40% percent of diagnosed breast cancer is detected by women who feel a lump on their own bodies, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important.”

A healthy environment equates to healthier human beings and a reduced cancer risk. The environment has always been a part of the B4BC mission. During this crucial time of the COP21 talks in Paris, while our global leaders are chasing down a climate deal that could radically effect the world, we would like to share the news of how the environment will play a larger role in 2016 for B4BC as well. Just like every other business, whether it be for-profit or non-profit, it is our responsibility to seek solutions towards limiting and erasing our organization’s carbon-footprint all together. Here’s why: So far the world is more than halfway towards exceeding what scientist have said is the catastrophic warming mark of 2 degrees Celsius. According to a recent report from Time Magazine, to even have a 50-50 chance at keeping the global temperature
Boarding For Breast Cancer (B4BC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation dedicated to providing breast cancer education, prevention and support programs for young people and the action sports community at large.
