It’s no secret that buying organic is a great decision, if you can afford it. There is little downside to keeping the pesticides and herbicides used to produce your foods to a minimum. However, it’s also no secret that buying organic is expensive. For some, especially people with families, it can be overwhelming to foot the bill of an all-organic grocery run. Is it worth the investment? We'd argue yes, but still, some people just don't have the money to invest, and there is nothing wrong with that.
With over 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the US alone, B4BC recognizes the importance of supporting our growing survivor community. In 2009, the B4BC Survivorship Fund was established to connect breast cancer survivors with nature-based wellness experiences that enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship. This past fall we granted (10) breast cancer survivors the opportunity to attend our Chasing Sunshine Project: Ocean Retreat hosted by B4BC wellness ambassador, pro-snowboarder, survivor--Megan Pischke. The weekend focused on reconnecting with the natural world and ourselves through meditation, surfing, yoga, clean organic eating, and inclusive health discussions devoted to removing obstacles so that we may move forward, continue to heal, and achieve balance in our lives.
Boarding for Breast Cancer, the original youth focused breast cancer education foundation, successfully celebrated two decades of prevention and support programs for young people, Saturday, April 2nd at Sierra-at-Tahoe resort. Hosted by iconic action sports commentator Sal Masekela, the 20th Anniversary B4BC Snowboard + Music Festival couldn’t have been better, as the gathering of the tribes of pro riders, including feature appearances by Olympic Gold Medalist Jamie Anderson, a Big Air Expression Session, a Photo + Art Exhibition, yoga, as well as musical performances by EFG, Panic is Perfect and the Family Crest. More than $30,000 was raised from ticket sales, raffles, and vendor village fundraisers, and donated to the 501(c)3 non-profit.
Native to the Himalayas, Lycium barbarum, also known as the goji berry or the wolfberry, has been used for centuries, and is categorized as a potent super tonic herb in traditional Chinese medicine. Goji berries are fast growing and can thrive in a variety of climates. They are a true superfood, and contain almost 13% protein, making them one of the most protein-rich and nutritionally dense fruits. Just one cup contains 12 grams of protein! In addition they’re full of antioxidants and phytochemicals, helping to reverse free-radical damage and making them an excellent cancer-fighting food.
It's personal for B4BC friend and supporter Samantha Kuhr. Unfortunately, Sam was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, but we were so happy to have her join us for our Chasing Sunshine Project Ocean Retreat in Encinitas, California this past Fall. After her experience with B4BC, Sam connected us with her friend and employer Erin Condren (you may recognize that name). Erin Condren is not only an amazing woman herself, but runs an awesome company of the same name that produces the cutest planners, stationary, notecards, etc. We were so stoked to hear that Erin Condren wanted to create a product benefitting B4BC.

Spring is here, and with it comes many a music festival, including B4BC's Snowboard + Music Festival this weekend at Sierra-at-Tahoe! We want to make sure we keep all of our festival-goers healthy over the weekend and on all the other adventures this festival season brings. Since we’re in the healthy body business, we've put together a few crucial tips to take care of your body while you’re listening to the good jams.
When your hormones are out of balance, you know it. Stress takes over, weight creeps on for seemingly no reason at all, a full night of sleep is a thing of the past, and energy slips away all too easily. Unfortunately, hormone imbalance and estrogen dominance can greatly increase our breast cancer risk. However, we’ve also got some good news: reducing the effects of many of these factors is well within our influence! What you eat regulates many aspects of body function, including the secretion of certain hormones & your diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight, ward of different diseases and sicknesses, keep our hormones balanced and our estrogen at healthy levels.
Erin found her own breast cancer lump in the shower at the age of 27. After going through hell and back to fight it, she is proud to be cancer-free, and she now advocates for organizations like B4BC who teach people how to check themselves and that you are never “too young” to get breast cancer. Here are her words on her 5-year cancer-free anniversary: “Today is the day. Today I can claim that I am 5-years breast cancer free. As I sit and reflect on the last 5 years as well as the year of surgeries and chemotherapy, I am glad that it all happened when it did, when I was young enough to bounce back and start a healthier lifestyle for the future. I’m surrounded by the most amazing people but friends and family who have been a support the whole time. From the little things of forcing their way into my house after su
A few years ago, when I wanted to learn just how toxic the inside of my home had become, I called on Albert Donnay, a Johns Hopkins–trained toxicologist. Donnay is a master at revealing the invisible and the dangerous. To do this, he walks around your house with his nose in the air. The first thing Donnay asks his clients to do is gather all of their cleaning products, laundry detergents, bug sprays, air fresheners, dryer sheets — in effect, anything they can smell — and dump it all in a big garbage bag. Then he has them tie the bag shut for a month. Once the month is up, he tells them to open the bag and … inhale. Donnay calls the garbage bag 'the most effective thing I have to convince you to improve air quality in your home.
I love soups. I love Salmon. These days there seems to be more and more information regarding how amazing salmon is for your body. And lucky me, I live in the North West, and my family and I often enjoy this fish fresh. Salmon contains potent omega-3 fatty acids called eicosapentaenoic acids and docosahexaenoic acids. Yeah, fun words, but even more fun that they are so proficient at getting rid of inflammation. I was taught to only combine animal protein soups with non-starchy veggies, ocean veggies, and raw salads. This is a quick and easy recipe to share with someone you love.
2016 marks 20 YEARS of outreach, support, and events across the nation and we think that calls for celebration! You only turn 20 once and to celebrate, we’re going back to our roots. We’re heading to Sierra at Tahoe in Lake Tahoe, CA to bring back the iconic Boarding for Breast Cancer Snowboard + Music Festival Shredding the Love for 20 Years! The inspiration behind B4BC was a young woman named Monica Steward, co-founder of Bonfire, who at was diagnosed with breast cancer the age of 26 and passed away in 1996 at the age of 29. B4BC’s founders — all leaders in the snowboarding industry and pro riders— wanted to create a space to celebrate Monica’s passions, snowboarding and music, while communicating the importance of awareness and education for young people. Thus, the B4BC Snowboard + Music Festival was born. The first ever festival was h

I don’t remember when I started to collect crystals. But I do have a pretty good memory of all my dressers and bedside tables growing up. And they were all covered in rocks, shells, odd sticks/driftwood, and random pieces of chewed bubble gum. I remember once my dad bringing me home a bag of polished rocks from Wyoming. The Amethyst, Tigers Eye, and Rose Quartz stuck with me for nearly 20 years in over 6 different homes and lots of travels.
We’re back in Los Angeles after an amazing week in Vail, Colorado at the 34th Annual Burton US Open of Snowboarding. We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather for 4 days of outreach and incredible competition. We spent most of our time in the sponsor village hanging out with visitors from all over the world, spreading the word about early detection and prevention.

Over the weekend Taos Ski Valley helped us Shred The Love for our 5th annual winter event together! The action-packed day raised nearly $25,000 for B4BC’s prevention, education, and support programs, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting regional non-profit, the Anita Salas Memorial Fund, which provides financial assistance for breast cancer services in New Mexico.
Avocados: It was really only a matter of time before the ubiquitous superfood made its way into beauty cabinets everywhere. If you know us here at B4BC, you know we're AVO OBSESSED and now we've got even more ways to incorporate our favorite superfood into our every day. The fruit's oil is slowly gaining ground as a self-care staple and is the perfect swap for some of those toxic products that are often found in our beauty routines.
When we talk about SUPERFOODS, we always get really excited and then realize these foods usually aren't already in the average pantry – from tonic herbs to exotic berries, there are a lot of new foods to learn about, right? But what many of us don’t realize is what an arsenal of powerful superfoods already live in almost every one of our kitchens: the spice rack.

Climate change may seem to many of us a challenge too daunting to tackle directly through our own actions. But there is one small change each of us can make to play our part: We can shift our diets so they're healthier and more environmentally sustainable. The type of food we choose to eat makes up a large part of our personal carbon footprint. The meat and dairy that make up 22 percent of diets in the developed world emit large amounts of greenhouse gases — particularly dangerous methane and nitrous oxide. But there's a more understated food group that has a relatively tiny carbon footprint and is highly nutritious and rich in protein and essential micronutrients: pulses.
For the second year in a row, Shaun White’s Air + Style brought snow to the city! We had an amazing weekend onsite at Expo Park in Los Angeles where over 40,000 snow enthusiasts and music lovers converged for a weekend of festivities. We just wrapped our 9th annual winter Chasing Sunshine retreat for breast cancer survivors in Aspen, Colorado—a weekend full of positivity, wellness and healing. We are honored to have be able to fund scholarships for eight breast cancer survivors to attend this retreat, hosted by pro snowboarder and breast cancer survivor Megan Pischke, to connect these women with a nature-based wellness and sustainability experience that enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship. Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer in the Fall of 2012, ironically after hosting a B4BC surf and wellness retreat for breast cancer survivors.

Unfortunately, hormone imbalance and estrogen dominance can greatly increase our breast cancer risk. However, we've also got some good news: reducing the effects of many of these factors is well within our influence, who knew! What you eat regulates many aspects of body function, including the secretion of certain hormones & your diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight, ward of different diseases and sicknesses, keep our hormones balanced and our estrogen at healthy levels . In addition to reaping hormonal rewards through food, women can also drink their way to health with some easy, potent beverages that can have a big impact on the endocrine system. These recipes are simple, affordable, and — yes — totally tasty.
That's a wrap on an amazing 4 days at X Games Aspen 2016! The crazy weather conditions didn't stop anyone from coming out to watch the world's best winter athletes compete all weekend long. Thousands of X Games goers came by the B4BC booth in the ESPN Corporate Citizenship tent to get autograph signings by Team B4BC riders Jamie Anderson, Elena Hight and Kaitlyn Farrington, take the B4BC Prevention Pledge, and learn how to Check One, Two. We’re all about teaching the youth the best ways to prevent breast cancer and this was an amazing place to do just that!
