Beautiful weather, perfect waves, and a great sense of community made for a blissful day at the 2nd Annual Surf 4 Awareness contest in San O this past weekend! The event created by B4BC Board Member, Una Baker, and the Western Surfing Association was a huge success fundraising over $20,000 for B4BC’s educational outreach efforts!
Held at Trail 6 more than 150 surfers of all ages and their families came out to surf for breast cancer
awareness. The positive energy in the water and on the beach made for one exceptional event. Pros Pat O’Connell and Holly Beck even came out to surf and show their support. It was fun to see the groms and adults a-like enjoying the surf and embracing the positive message of the day. It was perhaps even more fun to see the little surfer dudes stoked on their pink trophies!
However, undeniably the most special moment of the day came with the “Breast Cancer Survivor Heat”, when six amazing women, including, Una Baker, Jerre Becker, Margaret McClure, Ruthe Spear, Kim Tilly, and Artie Thomas, took to the water and surfed their hearts out together for a monumental 30-minute heat. The crowd on the beach cheered them on as they took turns riding each wave into the beach. One of the survivors, Kim Tilly, had learned to surf only one week before so she could share the experience in the water with the other ladies. Another survivor told B4BC that
it was a very magical moment for her to surf with the other survivors, as she didn’t have the strength or
energy to compete last year due to her intense chemotherapy treatment. These women are truly an
inspiration for all and B4BC would like to thank them for their participation and commitment to helping us bring awareness and education to the next generation of surfers.
B4BC would also like to give great thanks to Una Baker, Greg Cruse and the Western Surfing
Association for all of their hard work and commitment to making this event a wonderful reality. Special
